So you want to make your home look like the ones in magazines? Well it’s not as hard as you might think. Here are 11 simple Home Decorating Tips.
Lighting is key
Most people don’t spend enough time lighting up their house or rooms for the specific effects they’re trying to achieve, instead relying on overhead lights for a general “ok” illumination. Before you do anything, read up on lighting and then take a tour of your house with every light turned off except one.
What dino each of the rooms look like? Do they need different types of lighting? Depending on what you want to achieve in a room, there are many options available. Use a lamp, overhead lighting, step lights (these are on the floor and cast light up the legs of furniture to make it look like it has more shape and form), and colored lightbulbs.
Choose a theme
This tip sounds simple, but is often overlooked or not done enough. Decide on one general theme per room and then select products that follow that idea. For example, if your living room has an earthy theme, choose natural textures and wooden furniture. If you have a room with an industrial look, choose metal appliances. If your kitchen room has too much space, add some wall arts to enhance the look of the wall. The possibilities are endless so get creative!
Mix up styles
This tip is crucial if your home doesn’t seem to have its own sense of style or personalisation. Too often people just “stick” different objects together without knowing the difference between styles. If this is you, stop! One of the most interior decor secret to achieve a look is to mix up different styles.
Only layer with objects that you love
This tip sounds simple but is often ignored. Layer furniture to create dimension and style, not quantity. If you haven’t noticed already, furniture and accessories come in different shapes and sizes (hello interesting shapes and sizes!) The key to designing with different objects is to maintain a consistent color scheme or theme throughout the house.
This tip is particularly useful when designing rooms with high ceilings. If you have a room with high ceilings but are limited on floor space, it’s best to choose furniture with smaller scales so the room doesn’t look empty or over-sized. If you are designing your first home, it is important that you should plan for your furnitures designs first as they are more difficult to change later on.
Rugs under everything
This is one of our favorite Home Decorating Tips yet because it makes such a big difference. We all have that space between two pieces of furniture that seems impossible to fill? Well use rugs! This tip is particularly useful for small spaces with high ceilings and it works amazingly well.
A pop of color
If you want to add a little extra style or pizazz, try using a bright or bold colored object in a room. This works incredibly well in bedrooms and living rooms.
Get creative with furniture
Turn a dresser into a side table to make the most use of your space.
Utilize your walls
Picture frames, wall arts such as metal signs or wood signs or canvas, and hanging plants are perfect for adding a little extra style or dimension to a room without taking up floor space. They are simply great addition to family wall decor.
Bold colors for big rooms
This is one of our favorite Home Decorating Tips yet. Large rooms often seem cold and uninviting so the best thing to do is to break up all that open space with color. Paint one wall in a bold or contrasting color than the rest of the room for an instant style upgrade!
Let your walls breathe
This means that you DON’T want to cover every inch of all 4 walls with furniture or accessories. This can make a room look cluttered and uninviting. If you add a wood sign like we stated previously, it should be considerred carefully with the overall space of your wall.
Remember, you want your guests to be able to walk around and enjoy the space. Designing a home can be hard and tricky, but it’s something you just get better at with time. We hope these Home Decorating Tips help you create the home you’ve always wanted!
